Left Handed Acoustic Guitar Playing
How to Use a Right Handed Guitar for Left Handed Acoustic Guitar PlayingÂ
If you’re left handed and you want to learn to play the acoustic guitar you might be able to find a left handed guitar at your local music shop but chances are good that you’ll have to order one. Ordering a special guitar for left handed acoustic guitar playing can be expensive and it might take a long time to get the guitar. If you haven’t played the guitar before then you might be hesitant to spend the money and take the time to order an expensive guitar before you even know if you want to really pursue playing the guitar. But you can use a less expensive right handed guitar for left handed playing if you have the guitar restrung professionally or if you restring it yourself with the strings backwards. Â
Have the guitar restrung professionally – For less than the cost of a guitar made especially for left handed acoustic guitar playing you can buy a cheap right handed guitar and have it restrung by a professional so that a left handed musician can play it. When you have a professional restring it essentially the professional will be moving the saddle, marker dots and neck nut to position them properly for a left handed player. This isn’t a great long term solution but it’s a good way to try playing the guitar and see if it’s something that you want to pursue before you invest a lot of money in a special guitar.Â
Restringing the guitar yourself – You can restring the guitar yourself with the strings backward, also called playing upside down, if you just want to get a feel for what it’s like to play the guitar as a left handed person. Because you’re not moving anything but the strings some chords may be difficult for you to reach and you should get a left handed guitar as soon as you are sure that you want to continue playing the guitar.
